Delhi Shopkeeper Thrashed Over Suspicion Of Selling ‘Cow Meat’ Near DU's North Campus

A 44-year-old shopkeeper, Chaman Kumar, was attacked by a mob in Northwest Delhi's Vijay Nagar over suspected beef sales. Police seized meat samples for analysis.

In a recent case of a mob attack, a 44-year-old shopkeeper was thrashed by a crowd over suspicion of selling “cow meat" in Northwest Delhi’s Vijay Nagar area, late on Wednesday night. The victim has been identified as Chaman Kumar, a grocery shop owner. The grocery shop of Kumar is named North East Store.

According to media reports, the incident took place close to Delhi University’s North campus at around 9 pm-10 pm.

The incident was caught on camera. In the video, a group of men can be heard chanting slogans calling for “those who kill cows to be shot."

Soon after, police rushed to the spot and security was heightened to restore normalcy in the area. Hindustan Times, citing police, reported that “meat samples have been seized and sent for forensic analysis to determine whether it is cow meat."

According to DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh, the complainant is a 15-year-old resident of the area.

“Upon suspicion of cow meat being sold, some members of the public manhandled the shopkeeper. He has been provided medical assistance and his medical examination is currently underway," HT quoted Bhisham Singh as saying.

The DCP said that the complainant alleged that he bought 1 kg cow meat for Rs 400 from the store.

DCP Singh said the CCTV installed in the area were being collected and would be reviewed to verify the sequence of events.

The DCP added that the situation was under control and legal action would be taken after the forensic report and proper investigation.
