A month after stepping down as Vice-President, citing health reasons, Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped out of his official residence and went to the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital in Dhaula Kuan to see a dentist. He is also learnt to have decided to vacate the V-P’s official residence this evening and shift to a farmhouse of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Abhay Singh Chautala in South Delhi’s Chattarpur Enclave.

Dhankhar, 74, has kept away from the public eye since his resignation on July 21. “For the past month, he has been walking (inside the V-P’s official residence) and meeting his relatives and old friends at his residence. Today he came out to visit a doctor,” said a source, indicating this was his first outing since he stepped down as V-P.

“He has conveyed to security agencies that he will shift to a private accommodation in Gadaipur DLF farms, Chattarpur Enclave, around 5 pm. Many of the belongings have already been shifted, while several household items have been moved to a flat inside the V-P’s official residence,” the source said.

When contacted, Chautala confirmed that Dhankar is shifting to his farmhouse. “We have old family relations, and he did not ask me for a house; I offered him one,” he said.

Dhankar’s wife, Sudesh Dhankhar, had travelled to Kithana, a village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district where Dhankhar was born, and to Jaipur last week by road.

The vice-presidential elections are scheduled for September 9, and Dhankhar has to vacate the V-P’s official residence, near the Parliament House Complex, before that. He had moved into the V-P’s official residence in April last year, and until he gets government accommodation, he will remain at Chattarpur Enclave.

Last week, he also re-applied to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Secretariat for pension as a former legislator. A former MLA from Rajasthan’s Kishangarh between 1993 and 1998, Dhankhar had been receiving MLA’s pension until 2019, when he was appointed the Governor of West Bengal. He was elected Vice-President in 2022.
