Diwali, widely known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with immense joy and fervour across India and the world. Symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, the festival carries profound spiritual significance. Beyond religious observances, Diwali conveys a universal message of harmony, new beginnings, and hope, bringing together families and communities in celebration.

Traditionally, Diwali involves lighting diyas (oil lamps), offering prayers to deities such as Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, and exchanging sweets and gifts. Over the years, the festival has transcended geographical boundaries, now celebrated by Indian communities and enthusiasts globally.

Celebration in Shanghai

An example of Diwali’s international reach was seen in Shanghai, eastern China, where the Indian Consulate and the Indian Association Shanghai jointly organised the region’s largest Diwali celebration. The event, led by Consul General Pratik Mathur, drew over 800 attendees, including members of the Indian diaspora, local Chinese residents, and representatives from various commercial sectors.

The ceremony commenced with Lakshmi Puja, invoking blessings for prosperity and well-being. It was followed by a series of cultural performances, highlighting the richness of Indian heritage through music, dance, and theatrical presentations. Guests were also treated to an array of Indian cuisine, which was particularly well received by foreign attendees.

In his address, Consul General Mathur emphasised that festivals like Diwali not only strengthen the bonds within the Indian diaspora but also enhance cultural understanding and cooperation between India and host countries like China. The celebration illuminated the night both literally and metaphorically, fostering a spirit of unity and cross-cultural dialogue.

The night of Amavasya, or the new moon, holds special spiritual significance during Diwali. According to legend, it was on this night that Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana and completing his fourteen-year exile. To celebrate his return, the people of Ayodhya lit the entire city with lamps, creating a spectacle of light that marked the beginning of the Diwali festivities.
