A doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, has been accused of assaulting a patient, prompting outrage and protests at the government-run hospital.

The incident, reported on Sunday, led the state Health Minister, Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil, to assure strict action following a thorough inquiry.

According to the complaint, the patient, who belongs to a village in the Kupvi subdivision of Shimla district, had approached IGMC after facing breathing difficulties.

He alleged that the doctor spoke to him in an offensive manner and physically assaulted him when he asked for respectful communication.

The patient’s attendants claimed that a video of the alleged incident was recorded and has since circulated widely on social media.

Soon after the incident, the patient’s family and supporters staged a protest outside the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding the immediate suspension of the accused doctor.

Reacting strongly, Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil said such conduct was unacceptable and went against the ethics of the medical profession.

He identified the accused as Dr SAR, a specialist in pulmonary medicine, and said senior officials had been summoned to his office.

“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. The Health Secretary, IGMC Medical Superintendent, and the Principal have been called for an explanation. A detailed investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken to ensure such incidents are not repeated anywhere," the minister said.

The Medical Superintendent and Principal of IGMC were summoned to the Secretariat in connection with the case as part of the government’s response.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur termed the incident unfortunate and disturbing.

He said such episodes raise serious concerns about professional conduct in public healthcare institutions.

Thakur urged the Chief Minister to personally take cognisance of the matter and order an impartial probe, while also directing the IGMC administration to put safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The hospital administration has not yet issued a detailed statement on the allegations. The matter remains under investigation.
