As the festival of lights draws near, doctors across Hyderabad are reminding citizens that while Deepavali is a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration, it also brings risks of skin and eye injuries due to firecrackers and pollution. Doctors have issued advisories urging people to celebrate responsibly and safely.

Dr. Deepika J. Sanbal, Consultant Dermatologist at Kamineni Hospitals, said that every year, hospitals see a spike in cases of burns, skin allergies, and pollution-related skin problems during the festival. She urged people to handle fireworks with care and avoid direct contact. “Always use protective gloves and keep a first-aid box ready. If any burn occurs, wash the area with clean cold water and apply a burn ointment. Never use toothpaste or oil, as these can worsen the injury,” she advised.

Given the rise in air pollution during Deepavali, the doctor recommended using a gentle cleanser and a good moisturiser to keep the skin protected. “People with acne or sensitive skin should be extra cautious. If you are exposed to heavy smoke, wear a mask,” she added.

Dr. Navya Cherukuri from LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), In-charge of Emergency Services listed out the Do’s and Don’ts in case of an eye injury.

Dos: rinse the eye gently with clean water or saline solution if there is any debris, keep the injured eye closed to avoid further damage and seek immediate medical attention from an eye care professional.

Don’ts: do not apply pressure to the injured eye, avoid using ointments, creams or any home remedies, never attempt to remove a foreign object or remedies by yourself and avoid ignoring worsening symptoms such as pain, vision changes or bleeding.
