Veteran writer Javed Akhtar believes artificial intelligence is an unstoppable scientific advancement, urging people to focus on harnessing its power for societal benefit. He noted that AI relies on existing data, placing control in the user's hands. Akhtar's perspective comes amid Hollywood strikes and debates over AI's role in filmmaking, highlighting its growing presence.

Javed Akhtar recently joined the growing chorus of celebrities who have weighed in on the effects of artificial intelligence on the film industry and society at large.

At the Soundscapes of India—Season 2, Javed was questioned about the International Film Festival of India 2025, which dedicated a section for AI content.

During the discussion, he said that every scientific invention, including automobiles and railway engines, was initially resisted by the people.

Akhtar stated that people feel "advancements are going to badly affect society."Sharing his perspective on the same, he said, "But science is not immoral. Whether (you think) it is right or wrong, science is going to move forward." He went on to add, "Even in foreign countries, artificial intelligence is making unbelievable achievements, and it's a reality now."The screenwriter also noted that one should now focus on how to use AI for one's own advantage. He said, "How can we control this power that's being generated and is supposed to be for our ease? But you cannot wish it away."

Javed says the AI user has the power

Javed also commented on screenwriters in Hollywood going on strike against the use of AI and machine learning models. He said, "The fact is that today AI depends on existing data. Who gives that data? You are giving them the data.

The data is always going to be shared and used."The veteran lyricist expressed that the power is in the user's hand. He said, "You have to decide what share of it you want. It is never going to stop."

Use of AI in movies

Recently, the producers of Aanand L Rai's 'Raanjhanaa' re-released the movie in theaters in Tamil Nadu with an alternate ending made with AI. The makers faced heavy criticism for the same. On the other hand, composer Anirudh Ravichander had recently stated that he has subscribed to a premium version of an AI to help him pen the lyrics of a song.
