The Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Thursday said that it is continuing with the investigation of renowned singer Zubeen Garg and has not found anything to suspect any 'foul-play' in the singer's death. Garg, who had a scheduled performance at the fourth Northeast India Festival at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 20, died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea.

“Based on our investigations so far, the SPF does not suspect foul play in the death of Garg," the SPF stated as reported by the news agency PTI. “We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information," the police further added, empathising its commitment to a thorough professional investigation.

Following the completion of their investigation, the SPF will submit the findings to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will conduct a Coroner’s Inquiry. This process, designed to establish the cause and circumstances of death, is scheduled for January and February 2026, with results to be made public once the enquiry concludes, according to the SPF.

The statement from the Singapore Police came after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police in India filed a chargesheet last week, charging four individuals, including Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, with murder.

Meanwhile, the investigation after the famous singer's death has sparked a major political flashpoint between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the main opposition, the Congress. Gaurav Gogoi took a jibe at Himanta Biswa Sarma following the SIT chargesheet.

"Zubeen da’s chargesheet is not about justice but it is about character assassination. The sole purpose of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is to lower the reputation of Zubeen Garg in the eyes of the public. To achieve this he can go to any extent, even blackmail the family and supporters of late Zubeen Garg. Zubeen da was Assam’s Kanchanjunga. We must not let Himanta Biswa Sarma harm Zubeen da’s legacy," Gogoi wrote on X.
