Donald Trump's defense for Tucker Carlson spells trouble for MAGA, Ted Cruz sets stage for 2028 run

The political landscape is buzzing as Donald Trump’s reluctance to denounce Tucker Carlson’s conversation with white nationalist Nick Fuentes has stirred controversy in the MAGA base. The ensuing chaos has prompted immediate resignations at the Heritage Foundation, and is seemingly laying the groundwork for Ted Cruz's presidential run in 2028, setting the stage for a competitive clash with JD Vance.

While the MAGA world is divided over Tucker Carlson's interview of Nick Fuentes, President Donald Trump's verdict on the issue spelled more trouble as Trump refused to condemn Carlson. Tucker, the former Fox News host, recently interviewed white nationalist Nick Fuentes who said he admired Hitler.

Giving the Holocaust denier a mainstream platform made Tucker Carlson the villain in the MAGA base but Donald Trump said people can't dictate to Carlson who he should interview.Trump said he does not know much about Nick Fuentes, but if Tucker Carlson wants to interview him, so be it. Fuentes responded on X, "Thank you Mr. President!" with a video of the president's remarks.

Heritage Foundation crisis over Carlson

Conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation is at the center of a major controversy as several of its staff members quit after its president Kevin Roberts supported Tucker and said the call to cancel him is being made by a "venomous coalition".

Then Roberts apologized for his statement and said he madea mistake and also the speech endorsing Tucker was written by a staff. But Roberts did not withdraw his earlier statement. On Monday, legal scholar Robert P. George announced his resignation from the Foundation's board, saying he could not stay unless Roberts retracted the video."Although Kevin publicly apologized for some of what he said in the video, he could not offer a full retraction of its content," he wrote in a post shared to Facebook.

"So, we reached an impasse."

Ted Cruz planning 2028 run based on feud with Carlson

The MAGA split comes with a 2028 opportunity with Israel supporter Ted Cruz. Axios reported that Ted Cruz, slammed by Nick Fuentes on Tucker show, is planning for a presidential bid in 2028 as a challenger to Vice President JD Vance, who is so far the favorite for 2028 GOP primary.
