In a dramatic twist to an eight-year-old double murder case that shocked Punjab, the prime accused has been apprehended in Noida, where he was found living a meticulous double life as a security manager at a residential society. Gaurav Kumar, 27, was wanted for the gruesome 2017 murders of senior journalist KJ Singh (64) and his nonagenarian, bedridden mother, Gurcharan Kaur (92), at their home in Mohali.

Kumar’s arrest by a specialised team from the Mohali Police on Thursday ends his three-year run as a proclaimed offender. He was originally arrested shortly after the 2017 murders but was released on bail in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. He subsequently jumped bail and went into hiding, forcing the Mohali court to declare him a proclaimed offender in 2022.

The trail led police to a large housing society in Noida, where Kumar had managed to secure employment and had successfully built a new identity. He was initially hired as a security guard but, due to his “very good" conduct and diligence, was quickly promoted to head of security and eventually manager of the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA). According to police, he had changed cities and jobs frequently over the years to avoid detection.

The breakthrough came through sustained technical and human intelligence gathering by the Mohali Police’s “Proclaimed Offenders Staff". The police were alerted after a society member eventually requested a background verification for the manager, a step the RWA shockingly admitted they had neglected to perform themselves, relying instead on “trust". The society’s predominantly elderly and retired residents were left stunned to learn that their trusted security head was a fugitive wanted in a high-profile murder case.

The original motive for the brutal crime, which involved Singh being stabbed multiple times and his mother being strangled, was determined to be spontaneous and revengeful. Investigators revealed that an altercation had occurred earlier that fateful day between the journalist and Kumar, during which Singh had allegedly slapped the younger man. Enraged, Kumar returned at night to execute the fatal attack before stealing the journalist’s car and belongings to facilitate his initial escape. His re-arrest now allows the court to resume proceedings in the long-pending double murder case, offering hope for justice to the victim’s family.
