Markets across Chittoor district are abuzz with activity on the eve of Deepavali. Shoppers are in high spirits as the prices of vegetables, fireworks, and flowers have dropped, making the festive celebrations more affordable for the people.
On Sunday, onions were selling for ₹20-25 a kg, and tomatoes for ₹15, in contrast to last year’s spiralling prices. Traders and vendors said that the steady inflow of produce from various regions, including Karnataka, along with good weather, kept supplies healthy this year.
Even firecracker outlets witnessed brisk business as compared to last year, when the locals travelled to Pallipattu, Vellore, Sivakasi, and Chennai in search of cheaper deals. Traders ensured reasonable prices, following GST 2.0 reforms, besides issuing bills for every purchase.
The prices of flowers saw a dip as against the high prices during Ganesh Chaturthi festival. With good yield available at Kuppam and the neighbouring Karnataka, regular festive favourites like chrysanthemum (chamanthi) was selling as ₹160 a kg, marigold (banthi) at ₹60 per kg, and even rose was available at affordable prices.
Officials from the various departments stepped up inspections to monitor prices and prevent overcharging. An amalgamation of steady supplies, fair prices, and billing has boosted the confidence of both traders and shoppers.
