A man was killed early Wednesday after girders from the Aroor–Thuravoor elevated highway project collapsed onto a pickup van in Alappuzha.

The victim, identified as Rajesh, 48, was driving from Ernakulam to Alappuzha when the accident occurred around 3 am. He died on the spot after the structure crashed into his vehicle.

The incident occurred while girders were being installed as part of ongoing highway construction. Two girders reportedly fell during the lifting process, one crashing completely onto the pickup van and the other partially collapsing. Rescue teams are currently attempting to remove the fallen girder using a crane.

Following the accident, traffic restrictions have been imposed along the national highway, and vehicles are being diverted as clearance work continues.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the collapse.
