In a shocking incident, a drunk man killed his wife, shot his 13-year-old stepdaughter and later took his own life following an argument over watching an NFL game on television in Florida, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday, December 21, when the man’s wife asked him to turn off the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said as reported by New York Post.
Judd said the accused, identified as 47-year-old Jason Kenney, had been drinking when the argument escalated into violence. During the fight, the victim, Crystal Kenney, asked her 12-year-old son to call 911. The boy ran to a neighbour’s house, where he later heard gunshots.
When police arrived at the Kenneys’ home, they found Crystal shot dead and her 13-year-old daughter shot in the face and shoulder.
The injured teenager was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later told investigators that she had begged Kenney not to shoot her, Judd said as quoted by the news outlet. “‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,’" she told investigators, according to Judd.
The boy who fled was not hurt, nor was the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, who was found asleep in her crib, cops said. Kenney was the stepfather of Crystal’s two older children.
Kenney fled the scene and contacted his sister in New York, telling her he had done “something bad." Police later tracked him to his father’s property, where he fatally shot himself in a shed as deputies tried to take him into custody.
During a search of the home, investigators found a handwritten note from Crystal Kenney urging her husband to seek help for alcohol and drug abuse, the sheriff said.
“You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God," the note stated, Judd said.
Judd said that the surviving children are in the custody of their grandparents.
“The entire family was destroyed," Judd said, adding “Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be."
