In a major crackdown on illegal online betting operations, the Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth Rs 7.93 crore belonging to several noted celebrities, including actors Urvashi Rautela, Sonu Sood, Ankush Hazra, and Neha Sharma; cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa; and politician Mimi Chakraborty, and others under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
The action follows an extensive investigation initiated on the basis of multiple FIRs registered by various state police agencies against the operators of the illegal offshore betting platform 1xBet.
According to the ED, the platform, along with its surrogate brands 1xBat and 1xbat Sporting Lines, was actively involved in promoting and facilitating illegal online betting and gambling activities across India.
NOTED CELEBRITIES IN ED NET
ED investigations revealed that the celebrities knowingly entered into endorsement agreements with foreign entities to promote 1xBet through surrogate branding.
These promotional activities were allegedly carried out via social media platforms, online videos and print advertisements, despite the platform lacking authorisation to operate in India.
ED officials further stated that endorsement payments were routed through foreign intermediaries and layered transactions to conceal the illicit origin of funds.
These proceeds have been identified as Proceeds of Crime (POC) generated from illegal betting operations.
