Ed Giacomin's career in the NHL lasted for over ten years, with the majority of his games being played as part of the New York Rangers. Upon his retirement after the 1977-78 season, he carried with him 290 wins against 54 shutouts in 610 regular-season appearances.
Enduring and trash-talking his way into respect from both teammates and opponents alike, he was also incredibly competitive.

In acknowledgment of his accomplishments, Giacomin entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987. His No. 1 jersey had been retired by the Rangers only shortly thereafter, on 15 March 1989, thus ensuring that the franchise and its fans would keep his memory alive. It remains hanging at Madison Square Garden, constantly reminding people of his great influence on the team.

To the Rangermen, Giacomin personified more than a goalie of tremendous skill; he was regarded as the heart of the club throughout his playing days. Club legend Rod Gilbert termed him the emotional nexus of the team, and that was, in fact a sentiment that the organization echoed in its statement after his passing. "You cannot discuss the history of this organization and not immediately think of Eddie," the Rangers said.
