Election Commission Press Conference Live Updates: The Election Commission (EC) is likely to hold a presser to announce the pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list on Monday evening, news agency PTI reported. The press conference invite does not mention the agenda, stating only that the Commission will brief the media at 4.15 pm. However, officials indicated that the announcement will concern an intensive revision of electoral rolls, as reported by PTI.
Which states the EC is likely to cover: The poll authority is expected to unveil the first phase of the SIR, which is likely to begin in stages from early November—starting with states going to polls in 2026 and a few others. Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry are among those scheduled to hold elections next year.
SIR vs SSR: On June 24, the EC had ordered an SIR across the country, beginning with Bihar, where elections are due in November. Unlike the annual and pre-election Special Summary Revision (SSR) followed over the past two decades, the SIR involves creating the electoral rolls afresh. Officials from Assam have already conveyed to the Commission their inclination to carry out an intensive revision of rolls only after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is published for the state. Assam is the only state to have already undertaken the exercise of preparing an NRC. So the poll panel, it is learnt, is yet to take a final call on whether Assam will be included in the first phase.
