An accident at Birmingham Airport in the United Kingdom on Wednesday afternoon led to the temporary shutdown of the runway until at least 8:00 pm local time. While operations had resumed by the time of writing, the incident prompted widespread flight delays and cancellations throughout the day.

The disruption was triggered by a small aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing at approximately 1:40 pm local time. According to West Midlands Police, the emergency landing resulted in a minor accident, reported Sky News. Emergency medical teams treated three people at the scene, with one individual reported to have sustained injuries. No fatalities were reported.

Footage of the incident quickly spread on social media platforms, showing a small white aircraft lying flat on the tarmac. The aircraft involved has been identified by Flightradar24, a popular flight tracking website, as a Beech B200 Super King Air. The plane had departed from Birmingham at 12:11 pm and was en route to Belfast in Northern Ireland.

In response to the incident, emergency services including police, fire crews, and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the runway. The first official update from Birmingham Airport came around 2:40 pm, confirming the suspension of all operations as authorities responded to the situation.

The closure forced the cancellation of at least 11 outbound flights to various destinations across Europe, according to the airport’s official website. Several other flights faced significant delays until the runway was cleared and deemed safe for use. Inbound flights were also affected, with some being diverted to nearby airports, while others were held on the ground or delayed mid-air. Passengers were provided with alternative arrangements where possible.

Airport officials urged travelers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport, as check-in counters and security processing were also temporarily impacted.

Birmingham Airport, the third-busiest airport in the UK outside of London, saw large crowds gather as travelers awaited updates. Normal operations resumed shortly after 8:00 pm local time, with the airport confirming the restoration of services via an announcement on X.
