A wave of pain has swept over the Nhava village in Uran taluka, Navi Mumbai, after the death of Maithili Patil, a crew member who was on board the Air India 171 flight which crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.
The entire village is mourning the loss of someone who rose amidst them and made a name for herself in the aviation industry.
Maithili was also the first person from Nhava to become a cabin crew member with a commercial airline — a moment of great pride for the village.

Maithili grew up in Nhava and had always dreamt of flying. She initially studied in Lady Khatun Marium School, where she dreamt of touching the skies. She fulfilled her dream as she served on international flights.
“She was a humble and disciplined student," said Daisamma Paul, the school principal. “She finished her 12th in 2020-21 and then did a cabin crew course. Later, she joined Air India. Even after finishing school, she kept in touch with us. Just two months ago, she came for a career guidance session and encouraged students to look at careers in aviation."
The villagers, who had followed her progress with pride, are heartbroken. Her father, Moreshwar Patil, an ONGC employee who supported her dreams despite financial struggles, has gone to Ahmedabad with the rest of the family.
Recalling her nature, former Nhava Sarpanch Harischandra Mhatre said Maithili was simple and focused on her goals. “She didn’t waste time and was always polite. She was the first from our village to become an airline cabin crew member," he said.
Another villager, a distant relative, added, “Her father raised her in very difficult conditions. There was no regular income, but that didn’t stop Maithili from following her dream of flying."
