Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced plans to bring a new law to punish people who insult any religion. He said the Congress-led state government would amend existing laws to ensure stricter punishment for those who abuse or mock religious beliefs.
Addressing a government-organised Christmas celebration in Hyderabad, Reddy said the proposed law would be introduced during the upcoming budget session of the Telangana Assembly. He stated that the move was aimed at reducing religious hatred and maintaining communal harmony in the state.
The chief minister said that no religion should be insulted and warned that strict action would be taken against those who spread hatred through words or actions.
During his address, Reddy stressed that minority communities should receive the full benefits of government welfare schemes. He said the state government was committed to inclusive development and equal treatment for all sections of society.
He also said that long-pending issues related to graveyard land for Christians and Muslims would be resolved soon. According to Reddy, the government was taking steps to ensure that religious communities faced no discrimination in accessing basic facilities.
Praise for Sonia Gandhi sparks row
The chief minister described December as a “miracle month" for Telangana and the Congress party. He noted that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was born in December and that Telangana was also granted statehood during the same month.
Reddy said that despite political losses in Andhra Pradesh and after years of sacrifices by young people demanding statehood, Sonia Gandhi played a key role in the creation of Telangana. A video of his speech went viral on social media, where he was heard saying that Christmas was being celebrated in Telangana because of Sonia Gandhi’s contribution.
BJP and BRS criticise remarks
Reddy’s comments drew sharp reactions from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The Telangana BJP shared the video clip on social media and accused the chief minister of excessive sycophancy.
In a post on X, the BJP said the remark crossed all limits and mocked the statement, claiming that everything was being credited to the Gandhi family for political loyalty.
The BRS also criticised the comments, sharing the clip and questioning the claim that Christmas celebrations were linked to Sonia Gandhi’s role. The remarks have since intensified political tensions in the state, with the controversy continuing to dominate political debate.
