Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom’s ex partners are having a bad time. With one, Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr who he was married to, he has a son. And with Katy Perry, American singer-songwriter, he has a daughter. This is just basic information.
But what happened in the past week in Coachella Music and Arts Festival, California, US, involving both his exes, Kerr and Perry, is a curious coincidence.
They are stories of the nature of PR going rogue and the viral machinery totally working against stars.

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr in happier times

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, when they were together
First, for context, like many music festivals, Coachella, over the years, has gained the reputation where “being seen” is a part of PR manoeuvre by big stars, as social media engineering has made sure that we always have something to talk about celebrities when an event of this magnitude in on.Kerr, after her divorce from Bloom (2013), married Evan Spiegel (2017), American-French businessman, co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., better known as Snapchat. Spiegel was the youngest billionaire in the world in 2015. As of August 2025, he had a personal net worth of $2.5 billion, according to Forbes. It went like this. In an internal message, on April 15th, Spiegel informed his staff at Snap Inc. that “changes to the company's structure would affect the roles of around 1,000 team members (read 1000 employees would be laid off). He described the decision as “incredibly difficult”, even added that he was "deeply sorry" to those who would be leaving the organisation. The announcement triggered an immediate wave of reaction across social media platforms.
In the days of mass layoffs, another one just adds to the discontent not just among employees of the company going for the cull but almost everyone in the world.
Internet did what internet does best. It went into outrage mode. But then came the really clincher that blew this outrage into a full-blown meltdown. Kerr's social media post, a few days before the announcements of the layoff put Spiegel under fierce public criticism. As photographs and videos of him enjoying himself with his wife, went viral, the public erupted. In an internal note dated 15 April, Spiegel informed staff that changes to the company's structure would affect the roles of around 1,000 team members. He described the decision as "incredibly difficult" and said he was "deeply sorry" to those who would be leaving the organisation. The announcement triggered an immediate wave of reaction across social media platforms.
The New York Post wrote: "Snapchat CEO's tasteless photos kissing supermodel wife Miranda Kerr despite jobs bloodbath." Copies of his internal memo went public on social media. @TechLayoffTracker wrote on X (formerly Twitter): **SNAP CEO EVAN SPIEGEL JUST COLLECTED $731 MILLION IN STOCK WEALTH WHILE SLAUGHTERING 1,300 WORKERS AND CALLING IT "AI EFFICIENCY"**Translation: we taught machines to do your jobs and now you're disposable." Another user wrote Spiegel was "chilling with money" while his employees faced unemployment. One described him as the "worst CEO in the history of CEOs."You get the point. It's a burning discussion on social media right now.But let’s move on to another celebrity at Coachella last week, also ex partner of Bloom, Katy Perry. After she split with Bloom last year, she began dating former Canadian Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau
. Here’s how their Coachella story went. A photo posted on social media by Perry showed her and her alleged beau, Trudeau, drinking from single-use plastic cups. Now, again for context, Trudeau, during his time as PM of Canada, had announced a ban on single-use plastic. That was 2019. By 2022, the federal regulations came into effect. The internet went wild, this time too.

Katy Perry with her beau, Justin Trudeau, former Canadian PM, at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, last week.
The New York Post, wrote: "Justin Trudeau trolled for drinking from plastic cups with girlfriend Katy Perry. "Rules for thee, but not for me." Ryan O'Connor or @rpoconnor wrote on X: “Justin Trudeau, Jun. 10, 2019: I'm banning Canadians from using single-use plastics! Justin Trudeau, Apr. 12, 2026: Look at me smash booze from a solo cup at Coachella!”
You can guess the rest of the chatter on this topic on social media, or check it out later at leisure. This was anger directed at Trudeau. But this isn't where the story ends.

Australian actress Ruby Rose (right) has accused Katy Perry of sexual assault. The Australian authorities are investigating the claims
Then came the kicker for Perry. Australian actress Ruby Rose, commenting on Perry at Coachella, alleged: “Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a sh*t what she thinks,” Rose wrote in the now-deleted post. Perry, has categorically, denied the allegations but is now under investigation in Australia over the sexual assault allegations. All in all, the exes of Bloom are having quite the harrowing time after their social media posts from Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Both Kerr and Perry’s posts were meant to go viral because that’s how celebs stay in the news and on people’s minds. It’s a familiar routine we’ve all gotten used to. Though the respective outcomes from this music festival probably weren’t of the kind Kerr and Perry, or Spiegel and Trudeau, would have wanted. But then, such is the nature of social media. Stars may want to be edgy and always in "news", but it always carries the risk of the public completely turning against them.
