Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s chilling warning has hinted at a deeper storm brewing behind the latest gambling controversy, which has sent shockwaves across the community. It has landed Terry Rozier, Chauncey Billups and Damon Jones in massive trouble.
The FBI and Department of Justice have already launched an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Donaghy has weighed in, saying that he is not surprised that a former NBA player and coach were among the 30 individuals arrested in connection with the federal probe.
During his appearance on Patrick Bet-David’s ‘PBD Podcast’ on Friday, Donaghy was asked whether celebrities could be linked to the unfolding controversy. He responded by first explaining the key elements of wire fraud.
“When you talk about wire fraud, that is a law that can be applied to many different things… If you are just calling your buddy and telling him that somebody isn’t playing, even if it’s a nonchalant comment, transferring that over state lines is wire fraud," Donaghy said.
For context, in 2008, the former NBA official had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and distributing betting information after accepting thousands of dollars from a gambler in exchange for insider tips. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
Donaghy appeared on CUOMO to discuss the Mafia, the recent arrests and the alleged involvement of Miami Heat guard Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups.
“Definitely not surprised with what’s going on. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg," Donaghy said.
The former referee went on to explain how players could land in trouble by sharing information with friends.
“There is no doubt in my mind that some of these star players must have been saying something to their buddies back home and bets were placed and money was made," Donaghy said.
In fact, the former NBA official suggested that an even bigger gambling scandal could emerge at the collegiate level.
