In a case that has stunned Punjab’s political and police circles, former minister Razia Sultana and her husband, former Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammed Mustafa, have been booked for the murder of their 33-year-old son, Aqil Akhtar, days after he was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his Panchkula residence.

Aqil Akhtar was discovered unconscious at his home late on Thursday. His family rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. While the family initially claimed that he had died from a drug overdose, police said preliminary investigations pointed to possible health complications from medicines he had consumed.

However, the case took a dramatic turn after a video recorded by Aqil and testimonies from a family friend surfaced, suggesting that the young man had been under immense emotional distress and feared for his life.

Police launch investigation

Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta said that while no foul play was initially suspected, a complaint from a family acquaintance, Shamsuddin, along with Aqil’s video and social media posts, prompted the registration of an FIR for murder.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now been constituted to probe the allegations against Mohammed Mustafa, Razia Sultana, Aqil’s wife, and his sister.

“This is a sensitive and complex case," Gupta said, confirming that the SIT would review digital evidence, phone records, and statements from key witnesses to determine the truth behind Aqil’s tragic death.

DCP Srishti Gupta says, “This incident occurred on October 16. Aqil Akhtar, son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former Minister Razia Sultana, was reported deceased by his family and at that time, no suspicion was expressed. The body was handed over after a post-mortem. However, a few days later, a complaint was received from a third party stating that Aqil Akhtar had posted certain content on social media, including some videos…"

What FIR said?

According to the FIR accessed by CNN-News18, the complaint filed by Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla, alleges that Aqil Akhter, son of former Punjab DGP Mohammed Mustafa and former minister Razia Sultana, died under suspicious circumstances at his Panchkula residence.

The complaint claimed ongoing family issues and cites a video posted by Aqil on 27 August, in which he accused his father and wife of having an illicit relationship. Aqil had also alleged that his mother and sister were conspiring to kill him or implicate him in a false case, expressing fear that his life was in danger.

Chaudhary stated that Aqil’s sudden death confirmed his apprehensions, calling it a clear case of foul play. He urged authorities to conduct a thorough, fair, and impartial investigation, examining Aqil’s video, digital evidence, call records, and post-mortem findings. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at the MDC police station.

What Aqil Akhtar said in the self-made video?

In a video reportedly recorded in August, Aqil levelled explosive allegations against his father and wife. “I have discovered my wife’s affair with my dad. I am in a lot of stress and mental trauma. I don’t know what to do," he said.

Aqil alleged that his mother, Razia Sultana, and sister were also part of a larger conspiracy against him. “Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or to have me killed," he said, claiming that his father had known his wife even before the marriage.

“The first day, she didn’t let me touch her. She did not marry me; she married my father," he said in the video, adding that his family often dismissed his concerns by calling him “delusional" or “hallucinating".

Aqil further claimed that his family had forcibly sent him to a rehabilitation centre despite his sobriety. “This confinement was illegal because I was not intoxicated. If I was not mentally stable, I should have been taken to a doctor," he said.

He alleged that his family had taken away his money and were trying to protect their public image by portraying him as mentally unstable. “They threaten me that if I take any step against them, they will get me framed in a rape or a murder case," he added.
