The Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate list on Thursday featured a surprise with the inclusion of Dr Rajesh Kumar, a former IPS officer who retired as Director General from the West Bengal Police on January 31. After joining the BJP, Dr Kumar spoke exclusively to News18, stating that law and order remains a key concern in the state and urging officers to adhere strictly to the law during elections.
Excerpts from the interview:
What is your initial reaction after joining politics?
I have always served the people, and this is another opportunity to continue doing so. I would like to thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the Hon’ble Home Minister, and the BJP’s national and state leadership for their trust. I retired on January 31 and have been engaged in public service throughout my career. Whether in uniform or in politics, the objective remains the same—serving the people. There are issues related to crime in areas like Jagaddal, and I will work to address them.
Why did you join the BJP and not the TMC, given your background in government service?
This is not about comparisons. Everyone makes their own choices. I wanted an opportunity to do meaningful work, and I have received that platform here. The party has shown confidence in my abilities, and I will strive to live up to that trust.
Why should people vote for you?
People are facing challenges related to basic amenities, employment, and industrial growth. Law and order is also an issue in Bengal. If elected, I will work diligently to address these issues.
You have an association with Rajiv Kumar—will this political shift affect that relationship?
This is a political contest, not a personal one. I extend my best wishes to Rajiv Kumar. I am confident he will do well, and I believe he also wishes me well.
What is your view on the recent bureaucratic reshuffle?
The Election Commission is taking decisions based on available information. Officers should follow the law and ensure that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner. The commission is doing its job, and officers must cooperate.
The TMC has termed these transfers politically motivated. Your response?
Transfers are an administrative matter, and officers do not choose their postings. The Election Commission is acting on the basis of information available to it and is working to ensure free and fair elections. Officers should support this process.
You were reportedly placed on compulsory waiting. Did that influence your decision to join politics?
Postings, whether good or otherwise, are part of service life. I have no grievances against anyone.
