Fake vigilance officer arrested

Madhepura: Madhepura police on Monday evening arrested a youth who was posing as a vigilance officer and allegedly collecting illegal money from vehicles on the western bypass road near the new bus stand, under Madhepura town police station limits.The accused was identified as Vijay Kumar Singh, 34, a resident of Hanuman Nagar ward number 10 under Saur Bazaar police station in Saharsa district.Acting on information that a youth impersonating a vigilance officer was extorting money from motorists, station house officer Bimlendu Kumar, along with a police team, rushed to the spot to verify the complaint. On noticing the arrival of the police, the youth attempted to flee but was overpowered by the police personnel.

During a search, police recovered a fake identity card from his possession bearing the inscription “Special duty officer, post SI, state-Bihar”. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to his role.Madhepura SDPO Pravendra Bharti said the accused could be linked to a well-organised syndicate, adding that police are making efforts to trace other members of the gang. The accused was sent to judicial custody.
