Several farmers and residents gathered at Perungadambanoor village, located in Thirumarugal block of Nagapattinam district, on Saturday, reiterating their opposition to the construction of a regulator across the Vettar at Uthamasolapuram village.
The ₹49.5-crore regulator at Uthamasolapuram is aimed at preventing seawater intrusion and is being constructed by the Water Resources Department.
The protesters, including men and women, performed kummi, a traditional folk dance, and raised slogans against the construction work and alleged that it could spoil agricultural lands in the nearby areas and demanded that the work be taken up at an alternative site at Boothangudi villlage.
The protest was led by S.R. Tamil Selvan of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association.
