The Samyukta Raita Horata Zilla Samiti, led by social activist K. Neela, held a protest in Shahapur on Friday and demanded that case registered against the farmer leader Channappa Anegundi be dropped immediately.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Neela said that Mr. Anegundi had raised his voice against fertiliser shop owners selling substandard sowing seeds, during the event held at Agriculture College in Bheemarayanagudi recently.
“Aside from our prime demand to drop the case against Mr. Anegundi, the department should effectively distribute the sowing seeds through Raita Sampark Kendras to prevent selling of substandard seeds,” Ms. Neela said. She added that the police hadn’t registered the case against the president of Krishi Parikara Maratagarara Sangha, Basanagouda, and another one despite a complaint lodged after they threatened the farmers.
The farmers withdrew the protest after authorities from the Home, Agriculture, and Revenue Departments spotted and assured suitable legal action on the complaint registered by farmers.
It may be recalled that the Bheemarayanagudi police had registered an FIR against Mr. Anegundi after Mr. Basanagouda filed a complaint alleging that Mr. Anegundi used abusive words against the shopkeepers during the event.
Meanwhile, the shopkeepers also shut shop and demanded action. Considering the seriousness of the issue, the Deputy Commissioner, B. Susheela, intervened and solved the issue, and then shops opened.
