The Halasuru Gate police on Tuesday, November 11, arrested a man and his son for allegedly cheating a city-based jeweller of gold ornaments worth ₹1.6 crore.
The accused have been identified as Rajendra Kumar and his son Jeevan, residents of Nehru Nagar in Seshadripuram. They had a jewellery shop and used to buy gold valuables from the complainant on a share-of-profit basis.
According to the police, the complainant, a jeweller from Nagarthpet, alleged that between July 28 and September 4, the duo had taken gold ornaments from him on the pretext of selling these and giving him a share in the profit, but neither returned the ornaments nor paid the sale proceeds.
After repeated follow-ups, the complainant approached the police and filed a complaint.
Following a complaint filed on September 8, the Halasuru Gate police registered a case and arrested the accused from their residence.
The accused initially pleaded that they had incurred a business loss and were not able to pay, but a detailed probe allegedly revealed that they had melted the gold ornaments and converted them into a gold bar, which they had hidden at their house.
The police recovered a 1.3 kg gold bar valued at ₹1.6 crore from the residence. The duo has been booked under cheating and criminal breach of trust and remanded in judicial custody.
