COIMBATORE: The Federation of Kongu Region Agriculture Land Protection has demanded that the national highways department withdraw the proposed Kurumbapalayam – Sathyamangalam greenfield corridor project.

The federation said it would intensify the protest against the project as acres of farming land would be affected by it.Federation president Murugasamy, coordinator Dhanabal and other functionaries met reporters in Coimbatore on Tuesday. They said the greenfield corridor would affect the livelihoods of farmers in the locality. If the national highways implemented the project, it would take around 800 acres of land in Annur area.

More than 4,000 acres of farmland from Kurumbapalayam to Sathyamangalam would be affected, it said. The federation said farmers were not able to obtain loans from banks as the national highways department had issued a 3A notification. It said instead of acquiring acres of land, the national highways officials could expand the existing Sathyamangalam Road. “Farmers are ready to provide their land for expanding the existing road,” it said.
