FIFA honored Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, prior to the Club World Cup quarterfinal matches in Orlando, Florida, and Philadelphia on Friday.
Jota, aged 28, and Silva, aged 25, were discovered dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire on a secluded highway stretch shortly after midnight on Thursday.
During the match between Al Hilal and Fluminense at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, players formed a circle at midfield while a photo of the Portuguese soccer players was displayed on the video board. The crowd observed a moment of silence.
At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, where Brazil’s Palmeiras played Chelsea, a black-and-white photo of the brothers was shown and a moment of silence was held, with players from both teams wearing a black band on their sleeves.
Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, a friend and Portugal national teammate of Diogo Jota, made the sign of the cross as he entered the pitch, holding a jersey on his shoulder bearing Jota’s and André Silva’s first names. Neto lifted the jersey during the moment of silence with the assistance of Enzo Fernández.
Spanish police are investigating the crash, which did not involve another vehicle. They suspect a blown tire may have caused the accident.
Jota’s death came two weeks after he married longtime partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation following a season in which he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year.
Silva played for the Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.
