Mexico and Czechia will conclude their Group A campaigns with vastly different objectives in Mexico City.

Having secured consecutive wins over South Africa and South Korea, the co-hosts have already locked up top spot and a place in the knockout rounds. Czechia, however, come into the contest under pressure after collecting just one point from their opening two matches, leaving them in need of a victory and a favourable result elsewhere to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Team News

Having already secured top spot in the group, Mexico could rotate heavily against Czechia before the knockout stage. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez may be rested, while teenage prospect Gilberto Mora will be handed more minutes. There is also speculation that goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa could make an emotional farewell appearance.

Czechia, meanwhile, must chase victory and are expected to recall creative midfielders Pavel Sulc and Lukas Provod to support striker Patrik Schick. Defender Ladislav Krejci risks suspension with another booking, while injured David Jurasek remains unavailable.

Probable Starting XIs

Czechia (3-4-3): Kovar; Coufal, Holes, Hranac, Krejci, Sojka; Darida, Cerv, Sadilek; Hlozek, Schick.

Mexico (4-3-3): Rangel; Chavez, Vasquez, Alvarez, Reyes; Mora, Obed, Fidalgo; Quinones, Alvarado, Jimenez.

Key Stats

Mexico‘s reward for finishing first in Group A is a Round of 32 clash against a qualifying third-placed side, while the battle for the remaining qualification spots remains open heading into the final round of matches.

The fixture also revives a rare FIFA World Cup rivalry. The two nations last met at the tournament in Chile in 1962, when Czechia competed as Czechoslovakia. That match is remembered for Vaclav Masek’s strike after just 15 seconds, which stood as the fastest goal in World Cup history for four decades. Despite that early setback, Mexico recovered to win 3-1, although Czechoslovakia ultimately enjoyed the more successful campaign, advancing all the way to the final before losing to Brazil.

Prediction

Mexico would want to stay perfect, and all the impetus for a positive result will be heavily on Czechia. A solid defensive show by the hosts will give confidence and cause some trouble for the Czechs.

Prediction: Mexico 0-0 Czechia.
