The law firm that is representing at least 125 Air India crash families has reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), seeking data related to the accident that claimed more than 250 lives. Officials from the firm told News18 that based on FAA’s response, if the investigation demands, they will go ahead with suing Boeing in a US court.

The accident involved a Boeing 787 aircraft that crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport on June 12 this year. All the 12 crew members and 229 of the 230 passengers onboard died in the crash other than 19 who were killed on ground.

The US-based law firm, Beasley Allen, has now written to FAA seeking data on the crash.

The request letter sent to FAA, under the Freedom of Information Act, asks for the complete copy of all aircraft accident information gathered during the investigation involving Air India Flight 171.

It further seeks all Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) information along with pictures, video and diagrams from the accident site, including but not limited to all engine, instruments, and engine tear down or inspections. Other than these, the firm has also sought data from the Cockpit Voice Recorder, including all audio files and partial or full transcript.

These details, experts say, are expected to allow a detailed analysis of what could possibly have gone wrong on flight AI171.

When News18 reached out to Beasley Allen, attorney Mike Andrews said while the US government shutdown persists, response from the FAA is awaited.

“Beasley Allen currently represents the families of over 125 victims on the plane and on the ground. Based on FAA’s response and data from the onboard flight data recorder, if investigation into the crash demands, Beasley Allen plans to move ahead with suing Boeing in a US court," Andrews told News18.

The decision will be taken following a detailed study of the information shared by the FAA, as and when, he added.

Previously, talking to News18 Andrews had said documents from Boeing and Federal Aviation Administration suggest multiple redundant systems on this aircraft (Boeing 787), specifically with respect to water leakages in areas above and adjacent to electrical equipment that could affect electrical continuity.

As further information and data in this regard are received, the cause behind the crash will be clearer.
