As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, celebrations erupted across Bengaluru and beyond, with fireworks, chants of “Ee Sala Cup Namde," and a flood of congratulatory messages from fans and public figures alike. Among those joining the chorus was Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who expressed delight at RCB’s long-awaited win, especially for star batter Virat Kohli.
Tharoor, who is currently leading a multi-party Indian parliamentary delegation to the United States to present India’s counter-terrorism policy on global platforms, said the first thing he did upon landing in Washington was check the IPL final score.
“Very happy for @imVkohli that he #18 laid his hands on the trophy after 18 years of service! Congratulations," Tharoor wrote on X, sharing photos of himself checking the score on his phone mid-flight.
RCB’s thrilling six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad brought their 18-year title drought to an end. Having finished second in the league stage, Bengaluru surged into the finals with a dominant eight-wicket win over the same opponent in Qualifier 1. Punjab, despite making their second-ever final appearance after a victory over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, couldn’t withstand RCB’s momentum in the title clash.
The victory sparked joyous scenes on the streets of Bengaluru, with fans taking to the roads in celebration. Not just the fans — political leaders from across the spectrum joined in to celebrate the historic moment. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who is also part of the delegation led by Tharoor, posted a video on social media celebrating the win.
While the cricketing world hailed Kohli’s perseverance and RCB’s redemption, it was clear that the triumph resonated beyond the boundary — uniting fans and leaders across party lines in rare celebration.
