Reiterating that the BJP was not opposed to the Musi rejuvenation project, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay has said the party is staunchly against the demolition of the houses of the poor in the name of Musi beautification project.

“We will stall attempts, if any, to bulldoze the houses of the poor on the pretext of riverfront development, “ he said, suggesting that the Telangana government follow Gujarat’s Sabarmati riverfront development model.

He was speaking to reporters in Karimnagar after participating in Ugadi celebrations on Thursday.

He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made a statement that houses will be constructed for the families displaced by the Musi project in the same locality and rehabilitation measures will be implemented apart from setting up sewage treatment plans and building hospitals and schools. “We demand that the Musi clean-up project should be taken up only after implementing these measures,” he said.

Any move to demolish the houses of the poor in the name of Gandhi Sarovar project, as part of the Musi rejuvenation plan, will hurt Mahatma’s soul, he said.

Mr. Sanjay slammed the AIMIM MLAs, accusing them of walking out of the Assembly while Vande Mataram was being played during the session.

“This reprehensible act is a brazen insult to the national song,” he said, adding that the Centre had already issued directives pertaining to compulsory singing of Vande Mataram in official functions of the President and the Governors.

“The Speaker is the custodian of the Assembly,” he noted, adding: “Notices have not been issued to the AIMIM members in this matter so far.”

He further said, “All democratic forces must condemn the disrespectful acts of the AIMIM.”
