Jason Collins opens up about his tough battle with an aggressive brain cancer

Last Thursday, the ex-NBA player Jason Collins, declared that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma. In an interview with ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, he opened up about his health issue. He further talked about his diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The news was initially revealed in September of this year. The NBA said at the time: “NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor..

Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being.”Collins told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:“But now it’s time for people to hear directly from me.. I have Stage 4 glioblastoma, one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer. It came on incredibly fast… What makes glioblastoma so dangerous is that it grows within a very finite, contained space.."

He continued:“The skull -- and it’s very aggressive and can expand. What makes it so difficult to treat in my case is that it’s surrounded by the brain and is encroaching upon the frontal lobe -- which is what makes you, ‘you’.”In a statement made by the NBA in September, it was disclosed that Collins was undergoing therapy for the brain tumor. However, the 13-year NBA veteran thought it was right to reveal the complete truth to not only the fans but also the whole world.

He also described the gravity of his sickness and the degree of its aggressiveness. According to Collins, glioblastoma poses special difficulties since it grows inside the small region of the skull and has very aggressive traits. Rapid tumour growth can put important brain tissue under pressure that could be fatal. In this particular instance, the cancer encircles the brain tissues and poses a threat to the frontal lobe, which is in charge of personality, decision-making, and other aspects of personal identity.

Collins recalls alarming symptoms as he learns more about the aggressive nature of glioblastoma

Jason Collins further mentioned one specific instance in August when he and his husband missed a flight after he was unable to stay focused to pack for the trip. He also noted a situation one week earlier where he fell in his home, but “couldn’t figure out how to get myself up, how to put my knee down and balance to push myself up.” All these are the symptoms of Glioblastoma. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and common malignant brain tumor, originating from supportive glial cells (astrocytes) in the brain or spinal cord. It is characterized by rapid, invasive growth and poor prognosis. It also has symptoms like severe headaches, seizures, vision changes, and balance issues. Additionally, it is diagnosed via MRI/biopsy, and treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, though a cure remains elusive. Meanwhile, as of now, his husband hasn't said anything about the whole thing.
