Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday announced a nationwide shutdown and a coordinated street agitation aimed at securing the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The party said mobilisation orders have been issued across provinces ahead of synchronised protests.

Senior PTI leaders framed the proposed agitation as a final constitutional push to free Imran Khan, who has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since August 2023, spending more than a year in custody amid multiple legal cases.

Khan remains incarcerated despite repeated appeals and ongoing court proceedings, keeping political tensions high across Pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, addressing party workers, said the agitation was being launched on the direct instructions of Imran Khan.

“We have clear directions from Imran Khan. Enough is enough; now it’s time to hit the streets," he said, adding that the party was finalising plans for a full-scale street movement.

“We are ready for a street movement for justice," Gandapur said, warning that PTI would “jam every road and street of Pakistan" if its demands were not met.

He claimed party workers were “desperately waiting" for a mass mobilisation and asserted that the time had come to intensify pressure for Khan’s release.

PTI leader Sohail Afridi echoed the sentiment, saying the party was preparing for sustained protests and would not back down until “decisive political outcomes" were achieved.

According to him, workers have been instructed to remain on the streets as part of a long-term agitation strategy.

Top intelligence sources said Imran Khan’s arrest has galvanised PTI cadres across the country, triggering preparations for protests in multiple cities.

The leadership, they added, is seeking to force what it describes as “institutional accountability" through sustained public pressure.

The announcement comes amid heightened political uncertainty in Pakistan, with authorities bracing for possible disruptions to transport and daily life if the shutdown call is widely observed.

No official response from the Pakistan government or security agencies was immediately available.
