Paris Saint-Germain has been ordered by a French labour court to pay their former forward Kylian Mbappe up to 61 million euros ($71.8 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses. The ruling was made on Tuesday.

Mbappe, the captain of the French national team who left PSG in June 2024 to join Real Madrid, had initially sought over 260 million euros from his former club.

In response, PSG had demanded that Mbappe pay them 440 million euros.

The 26-year-old player also argued that the Qatari-owned European champions had misclassified his contract under French law, but this claim was rejected by the court.

The labour court determined that the final amount owed to Mbappe, between 60 million and 61 million euros, consisted of 55 million euros in unpaid salary and around six million euros in holiday payments.

Mbappe’s lawyers expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating that it reaffirms the applicability of labour laws, even in professional football.

PSG, while acknowledging the judgement, stated they “reserved the right to appeal" and asserted that the club has always acted with good faith and integrity.

The French club’s claim for 440 million euros partially included an aborted 300 million-euro transfer to Saudi club Al Hilal, which Mbappe had refused in June 2023.

Mbappe transferred to Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract expired the following summer, maintaining that he had not agreed to waive any payment from PSG.

He initially filed a complaint in June over his treatment by PSG at the beginning of the 2023-24 season, claiming he was sidelined and forced to train with players the club intended to offload after he refused to sign a new contract.

This practice, widespread in France, had led the players’ union to lodge a complaint the previous year.

Mbappe was excluded from PSG’s 2023 pre-season tour of Asia and missed the first game of that season but was later reinstated to the team following talks with the club.

After seven seasons with PSG, Mbappe moved to Real Madrid, where he reportedly earns an annual salary of 30 million euros.

During his tenure with PSG, Mbappe scored 256 goals in 308 games. The club won the Champions League for the first time last season, following his departure.
