A French soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been killed in southern Lebanon, President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday, blaming Iran-backed group Hezbollah for the attack.

Macron said the soldier was part of international peacekeeping forces deployed in the region when the incident occurred. Three other French soldiers were also wounded and have since been evacuated for treatment.

Macron calls for action

In a post on X, Macron said evidence pointed to Hezbollah’s involvement and urged Lebanese authorities to take action against those responsible.

Le Sergent-chef Florian Montorio du 17eme régiment du génie parachutiste de Montauban est tombé ce matin au sud-Liban lors d’une attaque contre la FINUL.Trois de ses frères d’armes sont blessés et ont été évacués.

The killing marks a serious escalation involving international peacekeepers, who are tasked with maintaining stability along Lebanon’s volatile southern border.

UN peacekeepers under pressure

The troops were serving under UNIFIL, which has long been deployed to monitor hostilities and support Lebanese armed forces in maintaining peace in the region.

The mission has faced increasing challenges amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, particularly in the context of the broader regional conflict.

Rising regional tensions

The attack comes at a time of heightened instability in the Middle East, with ongoing hostilities and ceasefire efforts continuing to shape the security landscape.

Any targeting of international peacekeepers is likely to draw strong international reaction and increase pressure on all parties to prevent further escalation.
