City-based philatelist and numismatist Vinayak Awate has a unique collection of stamps - those featuring Lord Ganesha. Inspired by his own name, which among the many names of Ganpati Bappa, Awate has meticulously collected stamps, stamp papers, and even coins from various countries and regions that feature the deity.
Besides arranging exhibitions of his collection, Awate is also involved in spreading awareness about the importance of postal stamps among youngsters.
He started his collection as a young boy, encouraged by a school teacher. “It's the best hobby,” says Awate, adding, “Stamps represent so many things about a region, be it geography, culture, traditions, information about flora and fauna etc. My passion demonstrates that philately is not just a hobby but a serious pursuit that involves historical research, networking, and a deep appreciation for culture and art”.
From a Ganesha seal and stamp of a royal family, to rare coins with Ganesha motifs, my collections is also a treasure trove of history, highlighting the significance of Lord Ganesha in not just India but many neighbouring countries as well.
