Bad blood erupted in Bad Homburg on Sunday when Greece’s Maria Sakkari and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva clashed after their first-round match.
Sakkari clinched a 7-5, 7-6(6) victory in the Wimbledon warm-up event in Germany but seemed displeased with Putintseva’s handshake at the net after her win.
“When you shake hands with someone, look them in the eyes," Sakkari remarked, as caught by the court microphone.
Putintseva responded with an exaggerated curtsy, prompting Sakkari to say: “Just be like a human being".
The exchange of words continued as Putintseva headed to the changing rooms.
“Go f**k yourself, nobody likes you," stated a heated Sakkari.
And while many of Putintseva’s verbal comments in the viral moment were unintelligible due to the positioning of the on-court microphones, she gave a clear response in the aftermath.
“I don’t think she’s going to invite me for dinner for the rest of our lives, but I don’t care," Sakkari said.
“I have very good friends and I’ll go to dinner with them. I’ll leave it at that and just say I have respect for her as a player, but that’s it."
But Putintseva, who once famously referred to herself as a “gangster on the court, but an angel off the court," also suggested that the scene wasn’t unique to either of them.
“By the way, not that I care," she began, “I shook her hand as most women do. Clearly not according to the ‘hugging protocol’ some men seem to follow."
Sakkari will next face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Belinda Bencic as she continues her preparations for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30.
