Golaghat district administration on Monday issued a flood alert as continuous rainfall pushed water levels in three major rivers above the danger mark, prompting authorities to warn residents across six revenue circles to prepare for potential flooding.DC Pulak Mahanta said the Dhansiri, Dayang, and Gelabil rivers are currently flowing above critical levels, posing imminent flood risk for communities along their banks.“Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels of the Dhansiri, Dayang, and Gelabil rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Residents of riverine areas must remain alert to counter potential dangers caused by floods,” DC Mahanta said in the official warning.The alert covers residents of Golaghat, Morongi, Khumtai, Dergaon, Sarupathar, and Bokakhat revenue circles, encompassing thousands of families living in flood-prone areas along these river systems.The district administration has established an emergency helpline at 03774-283282 for rescue operations, urging residents to keep this number accessible for immediate assistance during flood emergencies.

The comprehensive list of instructions warns against a multitude of dangers posed by floodwaters. The public is advised to strictly avoid bathing, fishing, or navigating boats in the swollen rivers and waterways. A critical warning emphasises the extreme danger of walking or driving through flood currents, particularly at night. The advisory highlights secondary risks, such as electrocution from submerged electrical equipment and the increased threat of snakes seeking refuge in homes.

Residents are strongly cautioned against consuming any food items that have been carried by or are floating in the floodwaters.“The water levels in our key rivers have exceeded the danger mark due to incessant rain. The safety of our citizens is our utmost priority, and we are urging everyone in the affected circles to exercise extreme caution and follow the issued guidelines meticulously. Our teams are on standby, and we have activated an emergency line for anyone requiring immediate assistance,” the DC added.
