Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase I of the Noida International Airport in March, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation ambitions.

In a boost for travellers, the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar announced on Friday that it will commence flight operations soon, creating a new gateway for passengers, airlines and cargo operators in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase I of the airport in March, marking a landmark moment for India’s aviation ambitions. Envisioned as a major international gateway for the National Capital Region, the project is expected to strengthen the country’s airport infrastructure while improving regional and international connectivity.
The airport will commence flight operations from June 15, 2026, with IndiGo to operate the first flight from Noida to mark the beginning of scheduled passenger services. Akasa Air and Air India Express are expected to follow shortly.
The airport has also received approval for the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which confirmed that the airport’s security framework, systems and operating procedures are in place in line with regulatory requirements ahead of commercial services.

Why Is This Airport Special?
Noida International Airport has been developed as the second international gateway for the Delhi-NCR region, complementing Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Together, the two airports are expected to operate as an integrated aviation network, easing congestion, expanding passenger capacity and strengthening Delhi-NCR’s position among major global aviation hubs.
The airport promises to combine modern terminal infrastructure, efficient operations and strong multimodal connectivity to offer a smooth passenger journey while supporting airlines. The commencement of commercial operations will represent an important step in strengthening regional connectivity, supporting economic development and creating new opportunities for tourism, trade and investment.
The first phase of the Jewar Airport has a passenger capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA), scalable to 70 MPPA in later phases. It also comprises a 3,900-metre-long runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, advanced navigation systems and a multi-model cargo terminal with a capacity of 2.5 lakh metric tonnes.
The airport has also been conceptualised as a net-zero emissions facility. It integrates energy-efficient systems and environmentally sustainable practices. Its design also reflects Indian heritage, drawing inspiration from traditional ghats
