Google’s AI arm – DeepMind is looking for a Senior AI economist to study how artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial superintelligence (ASI) could transform the global economy.
According to the job listing, the new role will focus on understanding economic shifts that may occur as AI systems become more capable. The selected candidate will lead research on post-AGI economics, exploring how the arrival of advanced AI could reshape areas such as scarcity, power, and resource distribution.“As a Senior AI Economist at Google DeepMind (GDM), you will be at the forefront of understanding the profound economic transformations that will accompany the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI),” the job description reads.
“You will lead a new area of research, exploring post-AGI economics, the future of scarcity, and the distribution of power and resources in a world fundamentally reshaped by advanced AI,” it states.DeepMind, founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, is known for breakthroughs in AI research, including systems like AlphaFold and AlphaGo. The company has increasingly focused on studying AI safety, governance, and its broader social effects as the technology advances.
Google DeepMind is led by CEO Demis Hassabis – a British artificial intelligence researcher, entrepreneur and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry.
Some of the key responsibilities of a Senior AI economist as listed in Google’s job posting are:
- Lead and develop the research vision for the AGI Economics workstream, identifying key questions and priorities.
- Design and build economic simulations and models, including agent-based systems, to explore post-AGI scenarios.
- Conduct foundational research on the long-term economic impacts of AGI, questioning existing assumptions about scarcity, wealth, and distribution.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers across GDM.
- Engage with external experts and institutions to build our research capacity and bring diverse perspectives into our work.
- Communicate your findings internally to senior stakeholders, and externally through publications and other artifacts.
Notably, Google isn’t the only tech firm that is hiring for specialists in this field. Claude-maker Anthropic is also looking to hire an ‘Editorial, Economics & Policy Lead’ to write about the impact of AI on labor markets and economic growth.
