Google is upgrading its
video generation
feature in
Google Photos
, introducing Veo 3 software to allow users to turn their still images into dynamic, four-second videos. This new capability is rolling out to users in the US. According to Google spokesperson Michael Marconi, the upgrade from the previous Veo 2 software will significantly improve the resolution and overall quality of these video clips.
How to use Veo 3 in Google Photos
Users can access the feature under the "Create" tab in Google Photos and choose between two options: "Subtle movements" for slight animations, or "I’m feeling lucky" for more dramatic effects, such as making subjects dance or adding falling confetti. This update is the latest move in Google's ongoing effort to bring advanced video generation tools to a wider audience. The company first unveiled the Veo 3 model at its I/O event in May, alongside the Flow text-to-video software.
Later, in August, it gave users access to a limited version of the AI-powered video editor Vids, which even included an AI-generated avatar.
Veo 3's capabilities and access
While Veo 3’s most notable feature, according to Google’s VP of Gemini Josh Woodward, is its “incredibly realistic” sound generation, the free version of this tool in Google Photos does not include sound. Free Photos users can use the video generation tool on a limited number of pictures each day, with Ultra and Pro subscribers having access to more generations.Located in the "Create" tab, the AI tool offers more than just motion. Users can also transform a photo into a 3D animation, which can then be exported as a video. Additionally, a new "highlights" feature creates a video montage of photos based on keywords you type into your gallery.
