If your mobile phone beeped loudly while you were relaxing, maybe sipping coffee, there’s no need to panic. According to a report by NDTV, the government is conducting a trial of a new emergency alert system that sends warnings directly to mobile phones within a selected region.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is carrying out the initiative in cooperation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Unlike standard text messages, Cell Broadcast alerts are transmitted to all mobile phones within a defined geographic area at once. This ensures rapid and widespread coverage without burdening telecom networks, NDTV reported.
The technology aims to fasten alert delivery in crucial situations, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, weather warnings, and man-made emergencies like gas leaks.
As part of the trial, testing is being conducted to analyse the system’s performance and reliability before its formal launch, says the report, adding customers may receive the notification in Hindi, English, or other regional languages.
The government has clarified in the message itself that there is no need to panic and that there’s no response needed.
