Government purchased over 4,000 quintals of onion in three days, says official

The State government has procured 4,817 quintals of onion at ₹1,200 per quintal at the Kurnool market yard in the past three days, said Agriculture Marketing Department Commissioner Vijay Sunitha on Tuesday (September 02, 2025) during a visit to the market yard. The Commissioner later held a meeting with the officials of horticulture and marketing department.

Speaking after the meeting, the Commissioner said that the decision to procure onion at ₹1,200 per quintal from the farmers was made on the direction of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. On Sunday (August 31), 212 quintals was purchased from farmers followed by 1,525 quintals on Monday (September 01) and 3,080 quintals on Tuesday.

She said that just 233 quintals was purchased through traders on Monday and Tuesday. She asked officials to take steps to purchase 3,400 metric tonnes of onion which is still in agriculture fields. “The State government will ensure that no farmer incurs losses. We appeal to the farmers to avoid panic plucking of the crop, instead let the onion grow fully and then only pluck it,” she said.

Meanwhile, Minister for Roads and Buildings B.C. Janardhan Reddy assured onion farmers from the undivided Kurnool district that their problems will be addressed and not to panic.
