State-run universities are finding it difficult to fill up the Vice-Chancellor’s post owing to applications from ineligible persons, Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar said on Monday.

When BJP member H.S. Gopinath drew the attention of the Minister to the V-C post at Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University being vacant, the Minister said that though application has been invited, the post could not be filled owing to applicants being unable to meet the eligibility criteria.

When the member sought to know if Nagesh Bettakote, who is acting as in-charge Vice Chancellor after his tenure ended in January, 2025, could continue, the Minister said that such provision exists only in Visvesvaraya Technological University.

Meanwhile, data placed before the House showed that five more universities are running without a full time Vice-Chancellor. A search panel for the selection of new V-Cs has been set up for Gulbarga University, Bengaluru City University and Gangubai Hangal university. With respect to Maharani Cluster, Nrupatunga and Mandya Universities, search committee is yet to be formed.
