Animal Husbandry Minister K. Ventakesh informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday that milk unions are autonomous and they have powers to fix different milk prices payable to producers in districts.
In a reply to a question by Aravind Bellad (BJP), the Minister said that Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Union has been paying the highest price of ₹39.98 per litre to producers, while the lowest was in Belagavi at ₹33. The demand and the profitability of the milk union were the major reasons for the highest price in DK district, he said.
After ₹4 hike for milk, he said unions have been paying ₹37 a litre for milk in Tumakuru, ₹34.5 in Hassan, ₹34.21 in Shivamogga, ₹35.4 in Chickballapur, ₹35.4 in Kolar, ₹36.1 in Mysuru, ₹36.15 in Bengaluru, ₹34.5 in Haveri, ₹33.9 in Vijayapura, ₹35.2 in Chamarajanagar, ₹35.3 in Mandya, ₹35.01 in Kalaburagi, ₹35 in Dharwad, and ₹34.1 in Ballari. The average price paid by milk unions in the State was ₹35.3 to producers, he said.
