Gujarat government on Monday announced relaxed liquor consumption regulations at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar. As per the new rules, any individual from outside Gujarat or a foreign national can consume alcohol at designated hotels or restaurants within the global finance centre by presenting a valid photo ID card.

Gujarat, traditionally a “dry" state where the manufacture, sale, and consumption of liquor are prohibited, made an exception for GIFT City in 2023, allowing the sale and consumption of alcohol within the central business district under certain conditions.

Further relaxing the norms, the government has eliminated the previous requirement of obtaining a permit for alcohol consumption.

According to the latest notification issued by the state home department, the new rules permit “external persons"—those not from Gujarat or foreign nationals—to consume liquor at designated facilities in GIFT City by showing a valid photo ID card. This update removes the earlier condition that required these individuals to secure temporary permits.

Another significant adjustment pertains to the locations where alcohol can be served and consumed. Previously, liquor consumption was restricted to designated wine and dine areas within hotels or restaurants that had the requisite permissions. Now, the rules have been relaxed to include areas such as lawns, poolside venues, and terraces.

Employees of GIFT City, who have a “Liquor Access Permit", can host up to 25 visitors at a time at designated places and visitors would get “temporary permits", provided that the host employee accompanies them, the notification stated.
