Gujarat Woman Killed By Fiance After Fight Over Saree Moments Before Marriage

A 23-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her fiance inside their home in Bhavnagar on Saturday, barely an hour before the couple was scheduled to get married, police said.

The incident took place near Tekri Chowk in the Prabhudas Lake area, where the pair had been living together for more than a year despite opposition from their families. The victim, identified as Soni Himmat Rathod, and the accused, Sajan Baraiya, were engaged and had completed most pre-wedding rituals. Their wedding was set for Saturday night.

According to the police, an argument broke out between the two over a saree and money shortly before the ceremony. In the heat of the moment, Sajan allegedly struck Soni with an iron pipe and then smashed her head against a wall, killing her on the spot.

Deputy Superintendent of Police R.R. Singhal said the accused also vandalised the house before fleeing.

“They had been living together for one to one-and-a-half years. Yesterday was their wedding. An argument over a saree and money escalated, and in a fit of rage, Sajan attacked Soni with an iron pipe and slammed her head against the wall," he said. The woman’s body has been sent for post-mortem.

Police rushed to the location after receiving information and have launched a detailed investigation. A murder case has been registered and a manhunt is underway to trace the accused.
