Check food safety licence of restaurants (FOSCOS portal)

"The Times of India' brings you 'Hack of the Day'—a new weekday series of quick, practical solutions to everyday hassles. Each hack is designed to save you time, money or stress, using tools and features within your reach—from government websites to everyday apps. In simple terms, it's simple fixes for smarter living."When dining out or ordering from a cloud kitchen, it’s important to know whether the establishment is legally registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

A valid licence ensures that the restaurant follows basic hygiene and safety standards. This simple check can help you avoid unsafe or unregulated food outlets.

How to verify

  1. Visit the official FOSCOS portal: https://foscos.fssai.gov.in (foscos.fssai.gov.in in Bing)
  2. Click on “FBO Search” (Food Business Operator Search).
  3. Enter details such as the restaurant name, licence/registration number, state, and district.
  4. The portal will display:
    • Licence number and type
    • Validity period
    • Registered address of the food business
  5. You can also cross-check the 14-digit FSSAI number, which usually appears on bills, menus, or food delivery apps.

Extra tip

If the portal shows that a food outlet is operating without a valid FSSAI licence, you can report it directly to local food safety officers through the same portal.
