Harvard Reportedly Bows To Trump Pressure; Shuts Down DEI Offices, Removes Faculty

Harvard University remains at a critical juncture in its standoff with the Trump administration, as negotiations over federal funding continue. While numerous other US universities have reached settlements with the administration to restore funding, Harvard has yet to finalise an agreement, even as significant changes are already underway on campus.

According to a report by The New York Times, Harvard has started to implement several demands from the Trump administration, notably including revisions to diversity programming and actions addressing antisemitism. However, not all demands have been accepted. Harvard’s interim president, Dr. Alan M. Garber, has rejected a number of proposals he deems “intrusive and unconstitutional," including those involving decisions about university admissions and faculty hiring.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, the university has reportedly begun dismantling certain diversity-related structures. Among the Trump administration’s conditions was the elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, a nationwide conservative push that has generated both political and legal battles. In response, Harvard has already removed several program leaders and closed key diversity offices.

One visible change came in April, when Harvard renamed its Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. It is now called the Office for Community and Campus Life. Additionally, Harvard removed the websites of its Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, along with those of affiliated offices for LGBTQ+ and female students. The university said these entities were being consolidated into a new, single centre, though details remain limited.

Another controversial development includes the removal of faculty members accused of promoting antisemitic views. As part of a broader call for institutional changes, the Trump administration targeted the Center for Middle Eastern Studies after complaints from Jewish alumni and others alleged that it hosted antisemitic programming. In response, Harvard dismissed two of the center’s leaders, a move seen by some as a concession to federal pressure.

Harvard has also responded to demands related to its global academic partnerships. Trump officials reportedly asked the university to sever ties with Birzeit University, a prominent Palestinian institution in the West Bank. Harvard has since suspended the partnership and announced new collaborations with academic institutions in Israel.

Although the university has publicly stated that the changes aim to create a more welcoming environment that supports diverse viewpoints, internal pushback continues. Many on campus fear that the implementation of Trump-era policies could infringe on academic freedom and expression.

“The term ‘capitulation’ is getting thrown around a lot these days," said Harvard history professor Kirsten Weld, who leads the university’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, a group that has taken legal action against the Trump administration.
